The Friday Playlist
Ahoy mateys! Thar be songs after the jump…
1. Washed Out – Echoes
Boy, kids these days sure like the ’80s. While we wait for a resurgence for He-Man Battle Snax chips, Spokey Dokes on BMX bikes and the bargain basement Transformers known as Gobots, let’s enjoy this synth-heavy soundtrack to your Friday night session at the roller rink.
2. Chad VanGaalen – Peace On The Rise
This multi-talented Canadian dude plays everything on his self-produced albums, does all the artwork and animates his own trippy videos. We would like to be his best friend. Chad, if you’re reading – get in contact. We can smoke peyote and talk about life and the cosmos and shit.
3. Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Ffuny Ffrends
Bedroom project from New Zealander Ruban Neilson that has got legions of people way cooler than us frothing at the mouth. Funky breakbeats + lo-fi psychedelia = a pretty winning combo. Dig it.
4. Deerhunter – Nosebleed
Deerhunter is one of those bands that can do no wrong. This short, sharp rocker is actually a B-side to the ‘Memory Boy’ single, meaning they’re so rad that they can just throw out gems like this as bonus tracks.
5. Built Like Alaska – There’s No Agenda
Little known band from Oakdale, California whose new album ‘In Troubled Times…’ is out later this year. Like Deerhunter, this ace song is an album offcut.
***Classic Track of the Week***
Beck – Deadweight
Okay, looks like there’s a theme developing this week. One of Beck’s best songs that didn’t even make an album (instead it was on the soundtrack for the rather average movie ‘A Life Less Ordinary’). Directed by Michel Gondry, who’s probably the best music clip director of all-time (seriously, check his credits here).
