1. Daft Punk – Get Lucky

It’s been pretty hard to miss this song over the past few weeks. But sometimes pop songs are popular because they’re straight-up awesome, and this be one. “I’m up all night to get lucky” is just one of those lines that rolls off the tongue when you belt it out in the car/shower/gay sauna/funeral. This is not the official clip, but it does the job. Bring on the album.

2. Client Liaison – End of the Earth

These Melbourne lads are hilarious. Taking ’80s Australian retro-pop to its upper limits, they walk the tightrope between utter wank and pisstake gold. We kind of like that we can’t tell which one they actually are.

3. Parquet Courts – Borrowed Time

These NYC dudes sounds like a mix of Pavement and The Strokes (so a mix of a dozen other bands too), but that’s no bad thing. Short, sharp, literate rock that is begging to be moshed to. Yeah, that’s right – moshed.

4. Holograms – Fever

Rad visuals (with boobies) and some good Brit rock. Even sounds a bit Dr Who in parts.

5. The Besnard Lakes – People Of The Sticks

This clip shares an important message: don’t take pills with members of The Besnard Lakes on them off a bald red-bearded dude, ingest them and try and do gymnastics, n’kay? Epic song, BTW.

6. Vydamo – One Way Trigger

Aussie duo pulls off a pretty sweet wibbly-wobbly cover of The Strokes  ”One Way Trigger” mashed into Melody’s Echo Chamber’s “I Follow You”. Was recorded on JJJ’s Like A Version, but the video has a bunch of annoying pre-amble.  Here it is on Soundcloud. Cue lump in throat.

Okay it’s not a proper video, but this song from this puncuation-happy band is FUNKY AS SHIT.

2. Colour Bomb – Beautiful Parade

Sure these guys are our friends and we also have some buddies in the clip, but fuck you, okay? This is our blog and we’ll do what we want. Added bonus: the clip and song are genuinely awesome. Oh, and sorry about that whole “fuck you” thing earlier. We still love you. Promise.

3. Palma Violets – Best Of Friends

A cracking anthem for all you loverlorn fools from the latest bunch of scrawny UK indie boys who’ll be forgotten about in 12 months.

4. Toro Y Moi – So Many Details

And here’s your sexy jam. Not sexy: Toro, who in the clip looks like a 12-year-old in a turtleneck trying to mack on a statuesque model. Nice try, brah.

Our favourite toothless rapper raps about drugs. Just for something different.

Winsome indie shoegaze starring a dude who really needs to see a doctor sharpish. Boom-tish!

1. King Tuff – Alone & Stoned

You like to punch cones out of an Orchy bottle bong? Yeah you do. So does this baked goon, and he’s got a nifty little power pop song to prove it. Your appreciation of the video will depend on your tolerance of watching hipsters getting high and being all goofy. Ours is kinda low.

2. Disclosure ft. AlunaGeorge – White Noise

This is the greatest dance song we’ve heard all year (pity the video isn’t as fun and sexy as the track). Should we each submit individual videos of us dancing to it, with y’all judging a winner? We can make that happen.

3. Spender – Never Again

At Dave and James we are always impressed with examples of excess, destruction and bubbles. Especially when it happens backwards.

4. Schoolboy Q – There He Go

There’s a lot to love about this hip hop banger, but mostly it’s how dude’s voice gets increasingly high-pitched in the chorus. Aces.

5. Big Black Delta – Side Of The Road

This is what Electric Light Orchestra would sound like in 2013 if made by dancing hipsters. It gets pretty future-y. We likey.

6. El Perro Del Mar – Hold Off The Dawn

It’s getting a bit late in the night, shit is getting mad sultry. You want to throw sexy eyes across the dancefloor, maybe snuggle up for some love times, have a little pash in the corner. You will listen to this and let El Perro’s sounds wash over you, and you’ll wonder how you can make babies with her sexy voice.

Classic Of The Week

Rolling Stones – Miss You

Can you ever get sick of hearing this song? No, you cannot. The Stones at their slinkiest/funkiest.

Okay, so it’s been a couple of months since Adam “MCA” Yauch of the Beastie Boys passed (May 7, to be precise), but it would be remiss of us not to pay tribute to the gruff-voiced MC with a beard like a billy goat.

The Beastie Boys were a huge influence for us both, and were one of the pillars of the Dave & James Holy Trinity (which you can read about here). Hello Nasty dropped when we were in a share house in ’98, and you best believe that album had the shit played out of it (The Fatboy Slim remix of Body Movin’ was a house party staple).

A number of ace Yauch tributes have popped up over the last few months, including the one above from Shepard Fairey and Glen E. Friedman that appeared on Sunset Blvd in LA.

This mural was done at the Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn where Yauch was a student. A group called the Entree Lifestyle crew did the piece, and issued this statement:

“On a personal note, the Beastie Boys were like older brothers to us. Inspiring us as rappers, stereotype crushers, instrumentalists, culture kings, videographers, editors, business men, show men and as exceptional and special human beings. Thank you for the inspiration, for this and many many more good reasons, in the heart of Midwood Brooklyn, where it all began, we payed tribute to the energy he gave us in the best way we knew how. Thank you for your contributions to music, art, and humanity. Shout outs to Mike D, King Ad Rock, and all of the family and friends of Adam Yauch. Our condolences during these difficult times. MCA’s essence lives on.”

The frankly awesome mural above – 12ft high and 64ft long – appeared in Brighton, England, done by AROE MSK of the Heavy Artillery crew.

Artist Eric Haze – the man behind a bunch of Beasties artwork – also managed to get a billboard tribute happening in LA. Sez Haze: “I was grateful to be given such a public forum to properly celebrate the life of my friend and collaborator Adam Yauch, and hope that these memorials will reverberate among the community that continues to mourn his passing.”

The same Beasties fan who paid money out of his own pocket to commission the Fairey/Friedman piece also paid for this one, a collab between Friedman and artist Kaves.

Lastly, the above appeared at some US airport. Respeck.
